Butler surprises No. 1 Villanova again 101-93

Kelan Martin scored 24 points and Paul Jorgensen had a career-high 23 to help Butler defeat No. 1 Villanova 101-93 on Saturday at Indianapol­is.

It is the second season in a row that the Bulldogs (12-3, 2-0 Big East Conference) have ended Villanova’s perfect start.

Jalen Brunson had 31 points and Mikal Bridges scored 21 for the Wildcats (13-1, 1-1), who cut a 23-point deficit to six points with 1:33 to play.

“This is the best offense we’ve played so far and it showed,” Villanova coach Jay Wright said. “We’ve really been outscoring teams to this point and we weren’t going to outscore this team tonight.”

The Bulldogs made seven three-point baskets in the final seven minutes of the first half to take a 53-45 lead and made all five of their three-point shots in the second half.

Still, the Bulldogs, who led 81-58 with 10:23 to go, struggled to put away the Wildcats. Villanova charged back with a 14-0 run to make it 84-76 with 5:04 to play and got within six on Brunson’s three-pointer with 25.4 seconds left.

at No. 4 Duke 100, No. 24 Florida State 93: Freshman Marvin Bagley III had 32 points and 21 rebounds to help lift the Blue Devils (13-1, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference). Phil Cofer scored a career-high 28 points for the Seminoles (11-2, 0-1), who went ahead 91-89 with just under four minutes to play but missed their final eight shots.

No. 12 Oklahoma 90, at No. 10 Texas Christian 89: Freshman Trae Young scored 39 points, including the tiebreakin­g free throws with 7.9 seconds left, and the Sooners (11-1, 1-0 Big 12 Conference) overcame a 13-point deficit in the second half. The Horned Frogs (12-1, 0-1) had a winning streak ended at 17 games. at No. 9 Virginia 59, Boston College 58: Ty Jerome scored a career-high 31 points, including two free throws with 53 seconds left, and the Cavaliers (12-1, 1-0 ACC) escaped with a victory. Ky Bowman, the leading scorer for the Eagles (10-4, 1-1) at 16.8 points per game, didn’t score until 11:03 to play and finished with five points.

at No. 20 Gonzaga 101, Santa Clara 52: Silas Melson scored 19 points, Josh Perkins had 12 points and eight assists, and the Bulldogs (12-3, 2-0 West Coast Conference) scored the first 15 points and cruised to their 16th straight victory in the series. Gonzaga had a season-high 28 assists on 36 field goals.

Arkansas 95, No. 19 Tennessee 93 (OT): Daryl Macon had a career-high 33 points, Jaylen Barford scored a career-best 28 and the Razorbacks (11-2) rallied from a nine-point secondhalf deficit in the Southeaste­rn Conference opener for both teams. Macon and Barford scored Arkansas’ first 13 points in overtime. Jordan Bone scored 21 points for the Volunteers (9-3).
