The 7-Eleven dream

Re “7-Eleven stores in 17 states targeted by ICE,” Jan. 11

The Trump administration is going after the most dangerous of undocumented immigrants: 7-Eleven clerks.

The acting head of U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement says the stepped-up raids are meant to eliminate an economic “magnet.” It seems that millions of people are flooding into the United States aspiring to become 7-Eleven cashiers.

ICE has crushed the 7-Eleven dream. William Goldman Palos Verdes Estates

Your story quotes a bystander, Imelda Vargas, as saying, “Everyone has the right to be here, to work.” It does so without comment.

While the sentiment expressed is nice, it simply isn’t true anywhere in the world. Every nation-state has regulations and procedures in place regulating the right to work.

For you to quote Vargas without factual commentary is useless at best and misleading at worst. Martina Ebert

It is estimated that there are about 11 million undocumented immigrants in this country. ICE arrested 21 in one day during its 7-Eleven raids.

Let’s be generous and say these people can be deported the same day, and ICE can perform similar raids daily. At this rate we’ll have all undocumented immigrants deported in about 523,800 days, or 1,435 years.

So, by the year 3453, the United States will be free of undocumented immigrants. I can hardly wait. Mary Rouse
