McIlroy reveals he has a heart ailment

Rory McIlroy says he has a heart ailment that will have to be monitored regularly but is not expected to affect his play.

McIlroy said in an interview with the Telegraph that he has a thickening of the left ventricle. He says doctors told him it was caused by a viral infection he suffered in China 18 months ago.

He says he’ll get an electrocar­diogram every six months and an MRI once per year.

McIlroy says he’s fully recovered from the rib injury he suffered a year ago.

Brian Harman’s game stayed with him from one island to the next in Hawaii as he made eagle on his last hole for a seven-under 63 and a three-shot lead in the Sony Open. Harman played in the final group at Kapalua last week and tied for third.

Utah Jazz guard Rodney Hood has been fined $35,000 by the NBA for slapping a phone out of a fan’s hand. Hood was forced to leave Wednesday’s game against the Washington Wizards after receiving a second technical foul. He knocked the phone out of a fan’s hand while walking past the man who was sitting courtside and looked to be recording Hood exiting the court . ... The season is over for the Miami Heat’s Dion Waiters. The team announced that Waiters has decided to have surgery on his long-problemati­c left ankle. Waiters has said that he was told it might take eight to 10 months to recover from such a procedure.

American David Wise will get the chance to defend his Olympic gold medal after clinching a spot in the Pyeongchan­g Games with a victory in a ski halfpipe qualifier in Snowmass, Colo.

Angelique Kerber won her eighth straight match of the new season, coming from 3-1 down in the final set to beat qualifier Camila Giorgi 6-2, 6-3 to reach the Sydney Internatio­nal final. She will face Ashleigh Barty, who beat Australian compatriot Daria Gavrilova 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the other semifinal. In men’s semifinals, Russian qualifier Daniil Medvedev booked a spot in the final by upsetting fourth-seeded Fabio Fognini of Italy 2-6, 6-4, 6-1. Medvedev will play Australian Alex de Minaur, who defeated Benoit Paire of France 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.
