LAFC signs Honduran goalie

The Los Angeles Football Club signed Honduran national team goalkeeper Luis Lopez, pending receipt of his immigratio­n paperwork. Lopez, 24, appeared in two World Cup qualifiers last year, including a 1-1 draw with the U.S.

David Beckham and his partners are planning a Monday event to formally announce Miami’s new MLS team, as well as its name and logo, a person with direct knowledge of the situation told the Associated Press on Wednesday.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because neither Beckham’s group nor MLS officials had announced the plans publicly. A spokesman for Beckham did not immediatel­y respond to a request for comment.

Golden State Warriors forward Kevin Durant plans to apologize to referee James Williams for behaving like a “jerk,” using an expletive to describe how he acted during a victory against the New York Knicks on Tuesday night when the NBA Finals MVP was ejected late for a second technical.

“I wish I had handled that better obviously but it was kind of a heat-of-the-moment for me. I could be better. It was a great learning experience for me though,” Durant said Wednesday. “I wasn’t getting picked on last night. I was being a diva last night. I’ve got to just own up to it.”

The NHL suspended Boston forward Brad Marchand five games without pay for elbowing New Jersey’s Marcus Johansson in the head during the Bruins’ win over the Devils on Tuesday.

The University of Iowa will take steps to resolve a federal inquiry that found some concerns about whether male athletes received more opportunit­ies than females, the school said. The moves are expected to resolve a lengthy investigat­ion by the Office for Civil Rights of the U.S. Department of Education without sanctions or findings of federal violations.
