SEW UP A LOVE STORY
The Envelope welcomes a select audience of Hollywood guild members and Oscar voters during awards season to consider some of the year’s most talked about films with the Envelope Screening Series. Recently, we featured director Paul Thomas Anderson’s tale of obsessive love, “Phantom Thread,” which earned six Oscar nominations this week. The story, starring Daniel Day-Lewis and Vicky Krieps is set in the world of 1950s England haute couture and features Day-Lewis as the exacting designer Reynolds Woodcock and Krieps as his new assistant, lover and muse, Alma.
Krieps and costume designer Mark Bridges, whose exquisite designs are featured as Woodcock’s creations, complete with a spring fashion show, spoke with L.A. Times film writer Mark Olsen.
“Paul requested that something in the fashion show indicate that Alma has affected his work, that she has inspired him. What if we used similar graphics to her dress that we see her in a simpler time and make it high fashion? And that was an idea of Paul’s.”
