Spieth set to compete at Genesis Open

Jordan Spieth, the thirdranke­d player in the world, will play in the Genesis Open at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades beginning Feb. 15.

He tied for fourth at Riviera in 2015, his best finish in four profession­al appearance­s, and helped lead Texas to the NCAA title in 2012.

“Riviera is one of my favorite courses in the world,” he said in a statement. “I will always remember winning the 2012 NCAA championsh­ip there and it’s always a thrill coming back.”

Canada’s Brooke Henderson bogeyed the first hole to drop into a tie for the lead Friday before the season-opening Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic in Paradise Island, Bahamas, was suspended for the day because of high wind.

He missed the start of last season because of shoulder and biceps problems . ... Jose Reyes and the New York Mets finalized a $2-million, one-year contract ... Free agent outfielder Lorenzo Cain and the Milwaukee Brewers finalized an $80-million, five-year contract. ... The Miami Marlins will install new netting at Marlins Park before the 2018 season to give fans along the baselines additional protection. The netting is designed to blend with the playing surface and is 30% thinner than existing netting behind home plate, allowing better visibility, the Marlins said.

Police officers used a stun gun on Milwaukee Bucks rookie guard Sterling Brown and arrested the 22-year-old after a confrontat­ion at a Walgreens parking lot. Police Sgt. Timothy Gauerke says officers contacted a man after seeing a vehicle parked across two handicappe­d parking spots while doing a business check at about 2 a.m. He did not say what led to the officers’ use of force and it wasn’t known whether Brown was cited for anything. “It’s a personal issue,” Brown told reporters . ... Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart will miss about two weeks after cutting his right hand hitting a picture frame. Smart apologized to his teammates, coaches and fans on Twitter on Friday, saying, “I feel like I let all y’all down.” ... Cavaliers guard Dwyane Wade will miss one game and possibly more time to attend to a personal matter. Coach Tyronn Lue did not provide any details about Wade’s absence.

Buffalo Sabres veteran defenseman Zach Bogosian will miss the remainder of the season after it was determined he requires hip surgery. He is expected to be ready for the start of training camp next season.

Kim Rhode of El Monte was chosen female shooter of the year for 2017 by the Internatio­nal Shooting Sport Federation. Rhode, 37, a six-time Olympic medalist in shotgun events, finished the season by winning the ISSF World Cup final. Matsuda Tomoyuki of Japan, who competes in pistol, won male shooter of the year.

A judge in Puerto Rico said there is not enough evidence to charge a former U.S. Olympic volleyball player from Louisiana in the 2016 death of her daughter. Police had accused Kim Willoughby of murder and child abuse.
