Curry, Irving out at least three weeks

-

Stephen Curry will sit out at least three weeks because of a sprained left knee, meaning the Golden State Warriors will be without their do-everything point guard and second-leading scorer for the rest of the regular season.

Curry could be back at the start of the playoffs next month if all goes well in rehabbing his latest injury. An MRI exam Saturday showed a Grade 2 sprain and the team said Curry would be reevaluated in three weeks, which would be April 14 and a possible Game 1 of the playoffs for Golden State.

The two-time most valuable player had returned from a sixgame absence after his latest right ankle injury Friday night only to injure his left knee.

In the third quarter of the Warriors’ victory over Atlanta, center Javale McGee fell on Curry, who hobbled off the court grimacing, sat on the bench and put his head down.

Another point guard, Kyrie Irving of the Boston Celtics, will sit out three to six weeks after surgery on his left knee. The club said Irving had a “minimally invasive” procedure to remove a wire that was put in the knee during surgery for a broken kneecap suffered in the 2015 NBA Finals.

The Celtics said the tension wire was irritating a tendon.

Boston has the second-best record in the Eastern Conference.

Since the playoffs begin in three weeks, the longer estimate for his return means Irving would not be able to come back until the second round.
