Pacquiao splits with trainer Roach

-

Manny Pacquiao appears to have split from longtime trainer Freddie Roach.

The final line of a news release about a Pacquiao fight against welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse on July 14 in Malaysia said, “Pacquiao will be joined by his new promotions team along with trainers Restituto ‘Buboy’ Fernandez and Raides ‘Nonoy’ Neri.”

There was no mention of Roach, who beginning in 2001 helped develop Pacquiao from a raw superbantamweight into a record sevendivision world champion.

“I had a great [16] years with the guy and if they feel it’s time for me to go, I’m not upset with Manny,” Roach told The Times. “We had a great run.” — Lance Pugmire
