Kvitova wins third Madrid Open title

When Petra Kvitova thought she couldn’t go on, the Czech hit the critical shots to finally edge Kiki Bertens and claim a record third Madrid Open title.

Kvitova outlasted Bertens 7-6 (6), 4-6, 6-3 in a grueling final decided when the unseeded Dutch player hit a backhand long on the final point after nearly three hours.

“Everything that I had in my body, I just tried to put it out, even if it was very, very tough today,” said Kvitova, who was playing her 11th match in 13 days.

On the men’s side, secondseed­ed Alexander Zverev brushed aside Denis Shapovalov 6-4, 6-1 to reach the final. Zverev will face Dominic Thiem after he beat Kevin Anderson 6-4, 6-2.

The 12th-seeded UCLA women’s tennis team defeated No. 25 Baylor 4-0 in the regional final at Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins will face No. 5 Mississipp­i —which beat Wichita State 4-2 — in Winston-Salem, N.C., Thursday . ... The Pepperdine women also advanced, defeating Kansas 4-1. The Waves will face Georgia Tech on Thursday.

The No. 2 seeded UCLA men’s team beat Idaho 4-0 to advance to Sunday’s second round. The Bruins will face San Diego, which ousted Texas Tech 4-2 . ... The 10thseeded USC’s men’s team also advanced to the second round, beating UC Santa Barbara 4-1. The Trojans will take on Harvard, which defeated Oklahoma State 4-2.
