Kings reacquire goalie Budaj

- — Curtis Zupke

The Kings reacquired veteran goalie Peter Budaj from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for forward Andy Andreoff.

Budaj, 35, will likely play for the minor league Ontario Reign since Jack Campbell is slotted as backup to Jonathan Quick.

Budaj experienced a career renaissance with the Kings in 2016-17 when he won 27 games with seven shutouts and a 2.12 goals-against average. But former general manager Dean Lombardi traded him to Tampa Bay with Erik Cernak and a 2017 seventh-round draft pick for Ben Bishop and a 2017 fifth-round draft pick.

Andreoff, 27, had 13 goals in 159 games with the Kings. He signed a two-year extension last summer.

The NCAA Division I Council approved a rule change that will allow college athletes to transfer and receive financial aid from another school without requiring the permission of their coach or school. The rule takes effect Oct. 15.

Even with the new rule, conferences could still restrict athletes from transferring within the league.

The council also decided that D-I football players will be allowed to play in up to four games in a season without losing a year of eligibility if they can no longer play because of injuries “or other factors.”

Jordan McNair, a University of Maryland offensive lineman who was hospitalized May 29 after an organized team workout, has died. He was 19.

McNair played one game last season as a freshman. The cause of death was not released.

Receiver Marquise Goodwin of the San Francisco 49ers is the winner of the 2018 George Halas Award from the Pro Football Writers of America, given to an NFL player, coach or staff member who overcomes the most adversity to succeed.

Goodwin and his wife, Morgan, lost their son, who was delivered stillborn Nov. 12. Hours later, he caught an 83-yard touchdown pass, the longest by a 49ers player since 2014. He blew a kiss to the sky before crossing the goal line, and dropped to his knees in the end zone in prayer, overcome with emotion.

Goodwin also went through the loss of his biological father in December, then was carted off the field after being injured in the season finale. He finished with 56 receptions for 962 yards and two touchdowns and was third in the NFL in reception average at 17.2 yards.
