Ronaldo reportedly takes deal in tax case

Spanish media reports that Portugal soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo agreed to plead guilty to tax fraud and pay a fine of 18.8 million euros ($21.8 million) in exchange for a prison sentence that most likely would be suspended.

Spanish newspaper El Mundo reported Ronaldo is ready to admit to four counts of tax fraud that would carry a sentence of two years. Prison sentences not more than two years in Spain often are suspended for first-time offenders. In 2016, Barcelona star Lionel Messi got a suspended 21-month sentence for defrauding tax authoritie­s. Former Lakers star Nick Van Exel and Jerry Stackhouse were among eight assistants named to Memphis Grizzlies coach J.B. Bickerstaf­f’s staff . ...
