Spence retains title with early knockout

Errol Spence Jr. stopped Carlos Ocampo in the first round Saturday night to retain the IBF welterweig­ht crown.

Fighting in front of a home crowd at the Dallas Cowboys’ practice facility in Frisco, Texas, Spence improved to 24-0 with his 11th straight knockout and 21st overall.

Ocampo (22-1) crumpled to the canvas after a right hand to the body just as the first round was ending. The Mexican challenger tried to get up but went down to his knees and was counted out.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones joined Spence in the ring after the quick victory, congratula­ting the fighter who grew up in DeSoto, just south of Dallas.

Cowboys quarterbac­k Dak Prescott and several teammates were in the crowd as well.

TENNIS Federer back at No. 1 after reaching final

Roger Federer defeated Nick Kyrgios 6-7 (2), 6-2, 7-6 (5) to book his place in the Stuttgart (Germany) Open final and reclaim the No. 1 ranking from Rafael Nadal.

The Swiss great will play Milos Raonic as he bids for his 18th grasscourt title and 98th altogether.

Raonic hit 19 aces and saved the only break point he faced as he defeated defending champion Lucas Pouille 6-4, 7-6 (3) in the other semifinal.

Johanna Konta overcame a rain delay and defending champion Donna Vekic 6-2, 6-3 to secure a place in the Nottingham (England) Open final for the second successive year. The top-seeded Ashleigh Barty awaits in Sunday’s final after the Australian beat Naomi Osaka of Japan 6-3, 6-4.

Andy Murray confirmed he will make his return to competitiv­e tennis at the Queen’s Club tournament next week after almost a year out injured and faces Kyrgios in his opening match.

ETC. Brother of NBA star killed outside of bar

Authoritie­s say the brother of Sacramento Kings forward Zach Randolph was shot and killed outside of a bar in the Indiana city where the two grew up.

Police said that an officer heard gunfire at around 5 a.m. and found Roger Randolph, 35, bleeding between two cars outside of Hop’s Blues Room in Marion.

They said investigat­ors don’t know the circumstan­ces surroundin­g the shooting, but they don’t think it was a random attack. Roger Randolph had several brushes with the law, including for a 2004 shooting at a nightclub that wounded three people and landed him in prison.

Brett Moffitt won the NASCAR Truck series race at Iowa Speedway, his hometown track. The 25year-old Moffitt led 76 laps for his second victory of the season. He started 16th, the lowest spot on the grid for a race winner in 2018. Noah Gragson was second.

Triple Crown winner Justify was calm while posing for thousands of fans who cheered and took pictures of horse racing’s newest superstar in 90-degree heat at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. A week after becoming the second Triple Crown champion in four years and 13th overall, the unbeaten chestnut colt received rock star treatment. Trainer Bob Baffert received his fifth engraved trophy for winning the Kentucky Derby with Justify on May 5 and said of the Triple Crown, “I still can’t believe we did it.” Anna Nordqvist and Lee-Anne Pace each shot eight-under 64 to share the third-round lead in the Meijer LPGA Classic in Grand Rapids, Mich. The United States beat Canada 113-74 in St. Catharines, Ontario, to clinch its fifth straight FIBA Americas under-18 title.
