Varner ties Kraft for the lead at West Virginia tournament

Harold Varner shot a four-under-par 66 to tie second-round leader Kelly Kraft at 14-under 196 for the top spot entering the final round of A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.

Varner had four back-nine birdies after 10 consecutiv­e pars. Kraft led by as many as four strokes but bogeyed two of the final three holes and shot one-under 69.

Sei Young Kim shot an eight-under 64 in the third round of the Thornberry Creek LPGA Classic at Oneida, Wis., to tie the 54-hole record of 24 under and take an eight-stroke lead.

Kim got rolling with an eagle on No. 3 and had six birdies. A birdie on No. 16 tied Annika Sorenstam’s 24 under at the Mizuno Classic in Japan in 2003.

Kim will take aim at Sorenstam’s 72-hole record of 27-under par, set at the Standard Register Ping in 2001 in Phoenix. Kim will need a four-under 68 on Sunday to set the record.

Amy Yang is second at 16 under after shooting a five-under 67.

Devin Booker, who averaged 24.9 points for the Phoenix Suns last season, signed a five-year, $158million maximum contract with the club.

Booker, who played at Kentucky, was the 13th overall pick in the 2016 draft. He has averaged 19.8 points per game in the NBA.

Gregg Polinsky was hired by the Detroit Pistons as director of player personnel.

Polinsky joins the Pistons from the Brooklyn Nets, with whom he spent the last 19 seasons in various roles, most recently as director of college scouting.

Defenseman Colin Miller signed a four-year contract with the Vegas Golden Knights that pays an average salary of $3.87 million. Miller led Golden Knights defensemen with a career-high 41 points (10 goals, 31 assists). The San Jose Sharks re-signed defenseman Dylan DeMelo to a two-year, $1.8-million deal. He had a career-best 20 points, all on assists, in a careerhigh 63 games.

Arizona Cardinals general manager Steve Keim apologized for what he called “incredibly poor judgment and inexcusabl­e actions” that resulted in a July 4 arrest in Chandler, Ariz., on suspicion of driving under the influence.

In a statement, Keim said that he failed to meet NFL standards of behavior and that he accepts full responsibi­lity for his actions.

Keim has been the Cardinals GM since 2013.

Chris Froome of England tumbled into a grassy field in the opening stage of the Tour de France, putting his pursuit of a record-tying fifth title in peril.

With grass stains on his right shoulder and blood trickling down his right arm from a gash on his elbow, Froome got back up and crossed 51 seconds behind Colombian Fernando Gaviria, who claimed the race’s first yellow jersey.

The family of a former Ohio State University team doctor accused by athletes of sexual misconduct says it is “shocked and saddened” by the allegation­s and is cooperatin­g with the school’s independen­t investigat­ion.

The Columbus Dispatch in a story published online said the statement was emailed by Scott Strauss, son of Dr. Richard Strauss, who killed himself in 2005 at 67. The statement said Strauss’ family learned from news reports about the allegation­s that athletes were fondled by Strauss during medical examinatio­ns. The allegation­s date to the 1970s.

Strauss didn’t return messages left for him by the Associated Press.
