Power takes first at Gateway for Penske

Will Power took a splash of fuel late in an IndyCar race, allowing him to go wide open to the checkered flag and not only give team owner Roger Penske another win at Gateway Motorsport­s Park but keep his championsh­ip hopes alive. Power had regained the race lead with eight laps to go, then held off Alexander Rossi. The Andretti Autosport driver wound up second, just ahead of series leader Scott Dixon, to trim into his points lead with two races left.

It was the first race for IndyCar since Robert Wickens was involved in a wreck last Sunday at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pa. His Schmidt Peterson Motorsport­s team announced shortly before the green flag that Wickens was breathing without medical assistance and had talked to his family for the first time since the wreck.

Justin Allgaier won the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Road America, pulling away over the final five laps to pick up his second victory in three weeks. Matt Tifft finished second and Daniel Hemric was third. Daniil Medvedev beat Steve Johnson 6-4, 6-4 in the WinstonSal­em (N.C.) Open for his second career ATP World Tour title. Medvedev didn’t drop a set in six matches in the final U.S. Open tuneup event . ... Aryna Sabalenka beat Carla Suarez Navarro 6-1, 6-4 to win the Connecticu­t Open in New Haven for her first WTA title. A Mississipp­i high school football player who collapsed on the sidelines of a game has died. Dennis Mitchell, 16, collapsed on a Clarksdale field Friday night.

The Kings signed forward Drake Rymsha to a three-year entry-level contract. Rymsha was a fifth-round draft pick last year and had 73 points in 68 games for Sarnia of the Ontario Hockey League. — Curtis Zupke

Catholic Boy pulled away from Mendelssoh­n down the stretch and won the $1.25 million Travers Stakes at Saratoga (N.Y.) Race Course.

Former Oklahoma star Blake Griffin was on hand for the dedication of the Griffin Family Performanc­e Center in Norman. Griffin, a former Clipper who now plays for Detroit, made the largest donation ever from a Sooner basketball player. The school would not disclose the amount.

Aukai Kea struck out 15 while throwing a complete game for Hawaii, which defeated Georgia 3-0 to advance to the Little League World Series championsh­ip. The Honolulu team will face South Korea Sunday after the Asia-Pacific regional champs beat Japan 2-1.

Lightweigh­t Justin Gaethje knocked out James Vick in the first round in the main event of the UFC’s Fight Night in Lincoln, Neb. Welterweig­ht Jake Ellenberge­r ,a 13-year veteran, retired in front of his home fans after suffering a fourth straight knockout loss, to Bryan Barberena.
