Thomas might not play Sunday

The Seattle Seahawks have not yet decided whether safety Earl Thomas will be added to the active roster ahead of Sunday’s season opener in Denver.

Coach Pete Carroll said a decision would come Saturday. He wanted to see how Thomas came out of the final day of practice.

Thomas held out from Seattle’s offseason program and training camp, reporting to the team only Wednesday. Thomas was seeking a contract extension or a trade.

The Seahawks could also have a developing situation at cornerback after expected starter Dontae Johnson suffered a groin injury in practice and was listed as questionable.

If Johnson can’t play, Seattle could start rookie Tre Flowers, a converted safety.

Falcons’ safety out for the year

The Atlanta Falcons will look at their current roster to replace Keanu Neal, the safety who will miss the remainder of the season after tearing a ligament in his left knee Thursday night in an 18-12 opening loss at Philadelphia.

Coach Dan Quinn said Friday he and general manager Thomas Dimitroff discussed outside options that could include free agent Pro Bowl safety Eric Reid.

Quinn didn’t rule out looking to acquire help in the future, but he said the first option would be a combination of Damontae Kazee, who replaced Neal in the game, and Jordan Richards, a safety who was acquired from the New England Patriots on Aug. 31.

Bears’ nose tackle gets extension

Nose tackle Eddie Goldman and the Chicago Bears have agreed to a four-year contract extension through the 2022 season.

A second-round draft pick out of Florida State in 2015, Goldman has started 32 of the 36 games played and has 81⁄2 sacks and 15 quarterback hurries.

General manager Ryan Pace calls it a “key extension for the future of the Bears.” He says Goldman is an “anchor” for the defense.

Outside linebacker Derrick Morgan is expected to play in Tennessee’s season opener at Miami, but the Titans’ top two draft choices, inside linebacker Rashaan Evans (hamstring) and outside linebacker Harold Landry (ankle) are out . ... The New York Giants will be without their best pass rusher for the season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Coach Pat Shurmur announced that linebacker-defensive end Olivier Vernon will miss Sunday’s game with an ankle injury. Vernon had 61⁄2 sacks in 10 games last season.
