Zetterberg forced to retire due to injury

- staff and wire reports

Henrik Zetterberg, who won the NHL’s Conn Smythe Trophy as the top player in the postseason when the Detroit Red Wings hoisted the Stanley Cup in 2008, is calling it a career.

The skillful Swede, 37, is a member of a select group of players that has won a Stanley Cup, world championship and Olympic gold.

Despite a back injury, Zetterberg didn’t miss a game for Detroit last season. But after a doctor’s exam last week, “nothing really had changed,” he said Friday.

“It is emotional,” he said. “It’s been 15 years here. Even though I knew I was on my last couple years, I wish that I could have played a little bit longer.”

Zetterberg had 337 goals and 960 career points and regularly was a candidate for the Selke Trophy for the best defensive forward.

The compliance committee’s recommendation came a day after the BBC published a WADA document saying neither of the criteria had been satisfied and it wouldn’t recommend reinstatement.

Travis Tygart, the chief executive of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, called on WADA to release any information it has received from Russia that shows RUSADA met the criteria.
