Murder charge in golfer’s death

Iowa State golfer Celia Barquin Arozamena, the reigning Big 12 champion and the school’s female athlete of the year, was found dead at a golf course in Ames, and 22-year-old Collin Daniel Richards has been charged with first-degree murder.

Police said Arozamena, 22, had been assaulted.

“We are all devastated,” Iowa State women’s golf coach Christie Martens said in a statement.

The NHL has begun its investigat­ion in the case of former Kings defenseman Slava Voynov, Deputy Commission­er Bill Daly confirmed. Voynov can apply for reinstatem­ent into the league after his criminal record was expunged in July. He was suspended following his no-contest plea to a misdemeano­r charge of corporal injury to a spouse in 2015. — Curtis Zupke

The Institute of National Anti-Doping Organizati­ons lashed out at a recommenda­tion to end the nearly three-year suspension of RUSADA.

The San Jose Earthquake­s fired first-year head coach Mikael Stahre with the team sitting at the bottom of the Western Conference standings. Assistant Alex de Crook also was dismissed. Steve Ralston was named interim coach.

Slugger Aaron Judge had 11 at-bats in a simulated game and closer Aroldis Chapman threw 22 pitches, perhaps the last steps before both are cleared to return to full action for the New York Yankees.
