Former Lakers coach McKinney dies at 83

Jack McKinney, who coached the Lakers for 14 games in 1979 but suffered serious head injuries in a bicycle accident and was replaced by Paul Westhead, has died, according to multiple reports. He was 83.

Westhead, with rookie point guard Magic Johnson, led the Lakers to an NBA title. McKinney was named coach of the Indiana Pacers and, after leading them to a 44-38 record and the playoffs in 1980-81, won coach of the year honors.

Canadian prosecutor­s dropped a domestic assault charge against Houston Astros closer Roberto Osuna, who agreed to stay away from the alleged victim for one year and continue counseling.

Osuna, formerly with Toronto, was charged with assault in May. The 23-year-old was suspended without pay for 75 games for violating Major League Baseball’s domestic violence policy, and the Blue Jays dealt him to Houston on July 30.

Speaking in court in Toronto, prosecutor Catherine Mullaly said the complainan­t, who lives in Mexico, had made clear she would not travel to Toronto to testify against Osuna.

“The Crown does not have a reasonable prospect of conviction on this charge absent her testimony,” Mullaly told Judge Melvyn Green.

Boston Celtics forward Gordon Hayward plans to play in Friday’s preseason game against Charlotte.

He hasn’t played an NBA game since last year’s opener, when he dislocated his left ankle and fractured his left tibia in his Boston debut.

Demoted Clemson quarterbac­k Kelly Bryant missed his second straight practice after an “emotional” talk with coach Dabo Sweeney. Bryant is a graduate who could play immediatel­y elsewhere next season, as long as he does not play anymore this year . ... San Diego State running back Juwan Washington has a broken collarbone and is expected to be out six weeks. He has 560 yards and five touchdowns in 99 carries.

Andy Murray advanced to the second round of the Shenzhen Open in China when wild-card entry Zhang Zhizhen had to retire in the third set. ... Second-ranked Caroline Wozniacki reached a third round for the first time since June at the Wuhan Open in China, while No. 1 Simona Halep lost in straight sets.

Brittney Griner, who sat out two games with an ankle injury, scored 15 points to lead the U.S. over Latvia, 102-76 in the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup. The U.S. is 3-0.
