Durkin fallout continues at Maryland

- Wire reports

The fallout continues for Maryland football over the reinstatement Tuesday of coach DJ Durkin followed by his firing Wednesday.

Two players — one described by teammates as pro-Durkin and another as anti-Durkin — had a physical confrontation, according to the Washington Post.

Conflicting accounts of the incident emerged Thursday. A person with knowledge of the situation said junior Matt Barber was assaulted by a teammate during Tuesday’s practice, which Durkin attended. In a statement released Thursday on Twitter, junior punter Wade Lees, who acknowledged he was involved in an altercation with Barber, his backup, said it had nothing to do with Durkin.

Barber, who has been called a whistleblower for cooperating with investigators regarding the culture of the program, had a black eye, required stitches on his forehead and an MRI exam for a separated shoulder. University police said an officer was on site at the time and there is video of the incident.

In another development, James Brady resigned as chairman of the University System of Maryland Board of Regents following the furor over the decision to reinstate Durkin.
