Kuchar, Westwood end more than four years of drought

Matt Kuchar and Lee Westwood ended more than four years without a victory.

Kuchar won the Mayakoba Golf Classic in Mexico, closing with a two-under 69. Kuchar had gone 115 starts on the PGA Tour since his last win in 2014.

Westwood closed with an eight-under 64 to win the Nedbank Golf Challenge in South Africa, overturnin­g a three-shot deficit to deny Sergio Garcia and Louis Oosthuizen.

Vijay Singh rallied from six shots behind with his career-best round on the PGA Tour Champions, a 10-under 61 that gave him a four-shot victory in the Charles Schwab Cup Championsh­ip and gave Bernhard Langer the season title and $1-million annuity. Langer won the Schwab Cup for the fifth time, and fourth time in the last five years.

Louisville fired football coach Bobby Petrino following a fifth blowout loss in which the Cardinals, 0-7 in conference play, allowed at least 50 points. Safeties coach Lorenzo Ward was named interim head coach. Petrino exits 77-35 in two stints with Louisville, including 36-26 since returning in 2014 . ... Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly says quarterbac­k Ian Book is expected to start Saturday against No. 12 Syracuse . ... Duke safety Dylan Singleton is out indefinite­ly with a broken left ankle . ... Washington State moved up to No. 8 in the Associated Press poll while the top seven remained the same.

Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey called a New York Times report that Carmelo Anthony was told he’ll be waived “inaccurate.” Anthony, averaging a career-low 13.4 points, sat out for a second straight game with an illness . ... Dwyane Wade will miss at least another week and remain with his wife and their new daughter before he returns to Miami . ... Former NBA player Jimmer Fredette scored 75 points in a game in China.

The Czech Republic kept its perfect record in the Fed Cup finals, capturing the trophy for the sixth time in eight years by defeating the defending champion United States. It was the first victory for the Czechs over the U.S . ... Roger Federer lost his opening match at the ATP Finals for the first time since 2013, 7-6 (4), 6-3 to Kei Nishikori in London.

Josef Martinez scored two goals and Atlanta United won the first playoff series in franchise history, knocking off New York City FC 3-1 to reach the Eastern Conference finals, where they’ll face the New York Red Bulls, who eliminated Columbus 3-0 behind Daniel Royer’s two goals . ... Daniel Salloi scored twice and Kansas City beat Real Salt Lake 4-2 to advance to face Portland in the West finals.

The Galaxy’s Zlatan Ibrahimovi­c and Carlos Vela of the Los Angeles Football Club were named to the MLS Best XI, the league’s postseason all-star team. Both are finalists for most valuable player. — Kevin Baxter

Wildfires affecting Pepperdine forced the school to relocate or reschedule home games in several sports including men’s water polo, which was to host the Golden Coast Conference championsh­ips next weekend. The campus is to reopen on Nov. 26.

Americans Kaitlin Hawayek and Jean-Luc Baker won the ice dance gold at the NHK Trophy.
