USC, UCLA women into round of 16

USC and UCLA advanced to the round of 16 in the NCAA women’s soccer tournament on Friday.

USC advanced with a solid 2-0 victory over Louisiana State at Tallahasse­e, Fla.

The Trojans (17-2-2) got goals from Savannah DeMelo in the 37th minute and Tara McKeown in the 58th minute to eliminate the Tigers (13-7-4). USC outshot LSU 17-5 and Kaylie Collins earned the shutout, the Trojans’ 15th of the season.

USC will play host to Florida State on Sunday in the third round after the Seminoles defeated South Florida 3-1. The Trojans and Seminoles played to a 0-0 tie in Tallahasse­e on Aug. 31.

UCLA cruised past Minnesota 5-0. The Bruins (16-3-1) got goals from Chloe Castaneda, Olivia Athens, Hailie Mace, Julia Hernandez and Kennedy Faulknor.

UCLA will host North Carolina State on Sunday.

Lexi Thompson shot a fiveunder 67 in the second round of the CME Group Tour Championsh­ip in Naples, Fla., to move to 12 under for the week, three shots clear of first-round leader Amy Olson (72) and Brittany Lincicome (71).

After reaching the last four at the ATP Finals for the first time, Alexander Zverev isn’t satisfied.

He set up a semifinal with sixtime champion Roger Federer by defeating John Isner 7-6 (5), 6-3.

Isner and Marin Cilic, who later lost 7-6 (7), 6-2 in a dead rubber against group winner Novak Djokovic, were eliminated.

Five-time champion Djokovic will face Kevin Anderson in the other semifinal on Saturday.

Kyle Busch will lead NASCAR’s title contenders at the start of Sunday’s championsh­ip finale, but he’ll have his teammate trying to spoil the show. Busch was the highest qualifying driver of the four championsh­ip contenders at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Denny Hamlin won the pole for Joe Gibbs Racing, and his teammate Busch qualified second for an allToyota front row.

Brett Moffitt won the NASCAR Trucks Series championsh­ip for Hattori Racing with a win, his sixth of the season, in the season finale at Homestead-Miami.

Longtime USA Gymnastics chief operating officer Ron Galimore resigned, the latest highprofil­e departure for the embattled organizati­on in the wake of the Larry Nassar scandal.

World Series most valuable player Steve Pearce is staying with the Boston Red Sox. The journeyman first baseman agreed to a $6.25-million, one-year contract . ... Houston assistant general manager Mike Elias was hired to rebuild Baltimore, which traded many of its star players last season before finishing with the worst record in the majors. Elias will carry the title of executive vice president and general manager.

WNBA champion Sue Bird is joining the Denver Nuggets’ front office while continuing her playing career. Tim Connelly, the Nuggets’ president of basketball operations, said Bird’s new title is basketball operations associate.

Arizona forward Josh Archibald was suspended for two games without pay by the NHL for an illegal check . ... The Edmonton Oilers traded forward Ryan Strome to the New York Rangers for forward Ryan Spooner.

Maurice Hooker spoiled Alex Saucedo’s homecoming by knocking him out in the seventh round in Oklahoma City, successful­ly defending his World Boxing Organizati­on junior welterweig­ht title.
