Southland ski resorts cranking into action
As November temperatures begin to cool, Southern Californian ski resorts are making snow and are opening.
Snow Summit ski resort in Big Bear Lake, which was to open Friday, will start by operating chairs 1 and 8, adding more terrain as conditions allow.
Sister resort Bear Mountain, also in Big Bear Lake, is set to open Friday Nov. 23 and will be open weekends, then start daily operations Dec. 7.
Mountain High resort near Wrightwood, which is split in three sections, has been making snow too. The resort could open as soon as Saturday, its website said.
In the Sierra, Mammoth Mountain at Mammoth Lakes opened Saturday after warm temperatures caused a delay in snowmaking.
Mammoth wasn’t the first ski resort in the CaliforniaNevada region to open. Mt. Rose on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe opened Nov. 2 with a base of man-made snow. Its slopes are now open daily.
Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows in Olympic Valley, Northstar California in Truckee, and Heavenly in South Lake Tahoe also opened on Friday; Sugar Bowl in Norden is set to begin Nov. 30.
Need some gear or tips for the slopes? You can catch the last day of Ski Dazzle (skidazzle.com), a marketplace for skiers and snowboarders, at the L.A. Convention Center. It is open noon to 6 p.m. today. Tickets cost $20.
