Kingsbury, Fedora out

Coaches Kliff Kingsbury of Texas Tech and Larry Fedora of North Carolina were fired after losing seasons.

Kingsbury, the former record-setting Red Raiders quarterbac­k, finished 35-40 in six seasons and lost his last five games. Texas Tech was 19-35 in Big 12 games under Kingsbury, even while consistent­ly having one of the nation’s top offenses.

Fedora overcame years of NCAA trouble — from inherited scholarshi­p reductions to an academic case that hovered over recruiting — to help the Tar Heels put up big offensive numbers and win an Atlantic Coast Conference division championsh­ip. But he couldn’t halt a downturn. North Carolina went 5-18 over the past two seasons marred by injuries, inexperien­ced players and close losses.

Western Kentucky fired secondyear coach Mike Sanford following a 3-9 finish, the Hilltopper­s’ first losing season since 2010 . ... Illinois extended the contract of coach Lovie Smith for two years through 2023 after the Illini finished his third season with four victories . ... Ohio State moved up to No. 6 in the Associated Press poll after trouncing rival Michigan while the Wolverines fell to No. 8. Georgia moved up a spot to No. 4 behind Alabama, Clemson and Notre Dame.
