Ex-Galaxy standout Beckham gets statue

The Galaxy will honor David Beckham with a statue of the English superstar outside Dignity Health Sports Park.

The statue will be unveiled before the March 2 season opener, a Galaxy spokesman confirmed.

Beckham joined the Galaxy in 2007 and spent parts of six seasons with them, leading the club to two MLS Cup championsh­ips.

Nineteen non-roster players received invitation­s to Dodgers spring training, including prospects Gavin Lux, Dustin May and Will Smith. Lux, 21, was recently ranked as the Dodgers’ No. 3 prospect and the No. 40 prospect overall in baseball by Baseball America, which rated May, a 21year-old right-handed pitcher, as the fourth-best prospect in the Dodgers’ system and No. 82 overall. Smith, 23, is the closest to making his major-league debut of the three. The catcher spent the final few weeks of last season with the Dodgers, and is expected to reach the majors in 2019. Other highly regarded prospects invited to camp are right-hander Tony Gonsolin and outfielder D.J. Peters.

Bryce Harper and the San Francisco Giants met in the free agent slugger’s hometown of Las Vegas this week . ... Pitcher Trevor Bauer went to salary arbitratio­n with the Cleveland Indians for the second straight year.

Phil Mickelson survived a wild finish to his round of four-under 68. Jordan Spieth endured the worst of the rain and hung on to join him atop the leaderboar­d until it was too wet to finish the second round in the AT&T Pebble Beach ProAm. The rain was slow to arrive, but Spieth caught the brunt of it. He made three tough pars to stay at 10 under through 16 holes until puddles formed on greens and the round was suspended . ... In Boca Raton, Fla., Jesper Parnevik shot a nine-under 63 in the Oasis Championsh­ip to take a one-stroke lead over Bernhard Langer. Parnevik had four straight birdies on Nos. 4-7 on his final nine . ... Kim Kaufman moved to the top of the leaderboar­d at the LPGA’s Vic Open in Barwon Heads, Australia after a seven-under 66 gave her a twostroke lead after two rounds.

The Philadelph­ia 76ers retired Hall of Famer Moses Malone’s No. 2 in a halftime ceremony and unveiled a statue of him outside Wells Fargo Center.

Defending top fuel champion Steve Torrence led qualifying in his class at the season-opening NHRA Winternati­onals at Auto Club Raceway in Pomona. Robert Hight (funny car) and Erica Enders (pro stock) also led qualifying.

In Montpellie­r, France, former champion Tomas Berdych reached the Open Sud de France semifinals, saving two match points in a 7-6 (3), 6-7 (5), 7-5 win against Filip Krajinovic.

Connecticu­t leading scorer Jalen Adams will be out four to six weeks because of a knee injury.
