Pacifica coach dies

Mark Campbell, the softball coach at Garden Grove Pacifica High, died Monday after becoming ill at a travel team game Sunday, the school announced. He was 57.

Campbell had been coach at Pacifica since 2009. Pacifica won the Southern Section Division I championsh­ip in 2014.

Ichiro Suzuki, the Seattle Mariners’ 45-year-old star outfielder, will start the opening game of the Major League Baseball season Wednesday in Japan, manager Scott Servais told the Japan Times . ... Left-hander Gio Gonzalez and the New York Yankees agreed to a minor league contract. Gonzalez, a two-time All-Star, was 10-11 with a 4.21 ERA last season for Washing ton and Milwaukee . ... Cincinnati expects left-hander Alex Wood (sore back) to open the season on the injured list . ... Retired outfielder Leroy Stanton, who played four seasons with the Angels in the ’70s, died last week in a single-car crash in South Carolina. He was 72.

Authoritie­s say two Texas A&M University-Commerce football players are recovering in a Florida hospital after being shot during a robbery.

A Miami police statement says the robbery occurred Saturday morning. The school identified the players as redshirt junior linebacker­s Jay Bias and Xavier Morris.

A statement from the university says Bias and Morris were in Miami for spring break.

Police released few details about the shooting. It wasn’t clear where the robbery took place, and no arrests have been reported.

Louisiana State football coach Ed Orgeron is in line for a two-year extension to 2023 and a $500,000 pay raise to $4 million annually, plus incentives, under a proposal drafted by the university’s athletic administra­tion.

Pioneerof the Nile, sire of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, died, WinStar Farm announced. The son of Empire Maker was 13.
