Syracuse sits Howard for violating school policy

- Associated press

Syracuse senior guard Frank Howard is out “for an indefinite period of time” for violating school policy.

The school announced Howard’s suspension on Wednesday, the eve of the Orange’s NCAA tournament game against Baylor in Salt Lake City.

The 6-foot-5 Howard lighted up social media during the ACC tournament against Duke last week when he appeared to stick his foot out as Blue Devils star Zion Williamson ran by. Howard denied trying to trip Williamson and the school did not say if the suspension was related to the alleged attempt.

Howard had an up-anddown season, but scored 28 points against Duke and played well in the ACC tournament with Tyus Battle out due to an injury. He averages 8.9 points and 2.0 assists.

Calipari expects Washington to play

Kentucky coach John Calipari said he expects scoring and rebounding leader PJ Washington to play in the NCAA tournament on Thursday despite seeing a foot specialist.

Washington spent several days in a walking boot “as a precaution” before the second-seeded Wildcats open Midwest Region play Thursday against 15thseeded Abilene Christian in Jacksonville, Fla.

Calipari said Washington wants to play in the first round. The 6-foot-8, 228pound Washington is averaging 14.8 points and 7.5 rebounds. The All-SEC selection is under consideration for national honors such as the Naismith and Wooden awards.

Bozeman f ired

Todd Bozeman was fired as Morgan State’s coach after a 13-year run. Morgan State athletic director Edward Scott announced Wednesday that he would not renew Bozeman’s contract, saying, “It became clear we are not reaching our full potential on the court.”

Bozeman owned a 195-218 record with the Bears and leaves as the winningest coach in school history. Morgan State appeared in the NCAA tournament in 2009 and 2010 after earning an NIT bid in 2008. The Bears were 9-21 this season, 4-12 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

Loyola Marymount 56, California Baptist 55: Eli Scott scored 10 points with nine rebounds and three assists for the Lions at Cal Baptist in a first-round CBI tournament game.
