Impey wins Stage 9 of Tour de France; Alaphilipp­e keeps lead

Daryl Impey of South Africa won Stage 9 of the Tour de France on a day when the top contenders for the overall race victory were happy to take it easy far behind on the hilly trek through the Massif Central mountains. Julian Alaphilipp­e kept the overall race lead. Impey pointed to the South African flag printed on his jersey as he crossed the line in the agricultur­al town of Brioude, having beaten Belgian rider Tiesj Benoot in a two-man sprint.

Natasha Howard scored 14 points a day after abuse allegation­s were raised against her to help the Seattle Storm beat the New York Liberty 78-69. The team said it is looking into allegation­s on social media that Howard physically threatened and abused her wife. No charges have been filed.

Ryan Leaf was hired by ESPN to be a college football analyst, another step in the remarkable comeback of the former Washington State star who has battled drug addiction and served time in prison. The Kings signed Tobias Bjornfot to a three-year entry-level contract. Bjornfot was chosen 22nd in last month’s draft. The Swedish defenseman represents the pick acquired in the trade of Jake Muzzin.
