Halep moves up to No. 4 in rankings

Simona Halep’s Wimbledon title lifted her from No. 7 to No. 4 in the WTA rankings, while runnerup Serena Williams moved up one spot to No. 9, her best placing since returning to the tour last season after having a baby.

Halep beat Williams 6-2, 6-2 in Saturday’s final.

Coco Gauff ’s magical run from a wild-card entry in qualifying all the way to the fourth round at the All England Club at age 15 allowed her to rise 172 places to No. 141.

French Open champion Ash Barty remains at No. 1, followed by Naomi Osaka and Karolina Pliskova.

Wimbledon men’s champion Novak Djokovic stayed atop the ATP rankings after his 7-6 (5), 1-6, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 13-12 (3) victory over Roger Federer in the longest final in tournament history. Rafael Nadal is No. 2, and Federer is No. 3.

Tour de France rookie Wout Van Aert won a sprint to the line while Julian Alaphilipp­e kept the yellow jersey after some contenders got trapped in crosswinds in the final kilometers of Stage 10 into Albi in southweste­rn France. Defending champion Geraint Thomas moved to second place overall, 1:12 behind Alaphilipp­e, with teammate Egan Bernal in third place, four seconds further back.

Michigan hired Jay Smith to be on Juwan Howard’s basketball staff as director of player personnel and developmen­t. Smith was an assistant coach for the Wolverines from 1989 to 1996 before going on to lead Grand Valley State, Central Michigan and Kalamazoo College.
