Skater says she was assaulted in 2008

Former Olympian Ashley Wagner said she was sexually assaulted by another figure skater in 2008 when she 17.

The three-time national champion wrote in USA Today that John Coughlin climbed into her bed after a party at a skating camp and began kissing and groping her. Coughlin was 22 at the time and took his life in January at 33.

Wagner said she was “absolutely paralyzed in fear.”

Wagner won an Olympic team bronze medal in 2014 and is now retired from competitiv­e skating.

Alex Meruelo, the son of Cuban immigrants, was introduced as the new majority owner of the Arizona Coyotes. He will serve as the Coyotes’ chairman and governor after becoming the first Latino majority owner of an NHL team . ... The New York Rangers bought out the final two seasons of defenseman Kevin Shattenkir­k’s contract.

Stewart Friesen won on the dirt at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, for his first NASCAR Trucks Series victory and a spot in the playoffs.

At Stanford, Ryan Lochte failed to qualify for the 200-meter freestyle final at the U.S. national championsh­ips. The 12-time Olympic medalist finished 37th in the preliminar­y heats with a time of 1 minute 50.25 seconds. Lochte is competing this week for the first time since the recent end of a 14month suspension for receiving an infusion of vitamin B-12 above the allowable limit. Elijah Winnington won the 200 free in 1:46.19 and Allison Schmitt, an eight-time Olympic medalist, won the women’s 200 free in 1:56.97. In other men’s events, Reece Whitley won the 200 breast in 2:09.69 and Austin Katz won the 200 back in 1:55.72.

Santa Ana’s Courtney Conlogue, Sage Erickson and Caroline Marks were among three heat winners in Round 3 of the U.S. Open of Surfing at Huntington Beach Pier. In Heat 2, Conlogue held off Alyssa Spencer 13.60-13.43. The top two in each heat advanced to Round 4. Australian­s Isabella Nichols, Sally Fitzgibbon­s and Bronte Macauley also won heats.
