Elliott dominates at Watkins Glen

Chase Elliott made a statement with a dominant win on the road course at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) Internatio­nal.

A year after racing to his first career NASCAR Cup Series victory at The Glen, Elliott won a second time in the No. 9 Chevrolet, besting Martin Truex Jr. just as he did a year ago. Elliott, who started from the pole, led 80 of 90 laps around the 2.45-mile layout.

Elliott already had qualified for the postseason with his win at Talladega in May. Denny Hamlin placed third.

Lewis Hamilton overtook Max Verstappen near the end of the Hungarian Grand Prix in Budapest to earn his 81st Formula One race victory and extend his championsh­ip lead . ... John Force, 70, raced to his record-extending 150th funny car win in the NHRA Northwest Nationals in Kent, Wash.

Alejandro Bedoya made a statement about gun violence during an MLS match in the nation’s capital. After scoring the opening goal in the Philadelph­ia Union’s 5-1 win over D.C. United, Bedoya ran to an on-field microphone and shouted: “Hey Congress, do something now! End gun violence! Let’s go!” Bedoya earlier tweeted about gun violence in Texas and Ohio that killed 29 people over the weekend.

Nick Kyrgios edged No. 3 seed Daniil Medvedev 7-6 (6), 7-6 (4) to win the Citi Open in Washington for his second ATP title of the year. In the women’s final, Jessica Pegula won her first WTA title with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Camila Giorgi . ... Ryan Lochte won the 200meter individual medley at the U.S. swimming championsh­ips in Palo Alto, fresh off a 14-month ban. The 12-time Olympic medalist touched in 1 minute 57.76 seconds — 1.07 ahead of runner-up Shaine Casas.
