Cardinals release defensive end Philon after arrest
The Arizona Cardinals released defensive end Darius Philon on Saturday, a day after Maricopa County jail records indicate he was arrested and booked on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly instrument.
The 25-year-old Philon, who spent his first five seasons with the Chargers, was a projected starter after signing as a free agent. He started Thursday’s preseason opener against his old team and played briefly, getting an assist on a tackle.
Coach Kliff Kingsbury said rookie Zach Allen ,a third-round pick out of Boston College, would take over as the starter.
The Cardinals signed Philon to a two-year, $10-million contract in March. The former sixth-round draft pick out of Arkansas started 19 of 54 games with the Chargers and had 91⁄2 sacks.
Exhibition action
Patrick Mahomes picked up where he left off from his record-breaking debut as a starter, marching Kansas City downfield for a firstquarter touchdown in a 38-17 win over Cincinnati.
Mahomes did a bit of everything on the only series by the Chiefs’ first-team offense, going four for four for 66 yards and adding a 10yard scramble and inducing an an offside penalty.
Andy Dalton was nearly as sharp for Cincinnati, going seven for nine for 80 yards and leading his team on a 14-play, 75-yard touchdown march to open the game.
Late in the first half, Chiefs quarterback Kyle Shurmur’s throw to Byron Pringle was picked off by safety Brandon Wilson. But under a new rule, plays can be reviewed for pass interference, and officials decided that cornerback Tony Lippett had caused interference. The Chiefs got the ball back and kicked a field goal.
The rule passed by a 31-1 vote of owners at the NFL’s annual meeting in Phoenix. The only team that voted against the rule? Cincinnati.
