Reed takes Northern Trust lead

Patrick Reed shot a four-under-par 67 to take a one-shot lead over Abraham Ancer on Saturday after three rounds of the Northern Trust at Jersey City, N.J.

“It’s close and it feels good,” Reed said. “Feels like this has been coming for some time, and now it’s just go out and stick to the game plan tomorrow and hopefully Sunday we have a chance to win the golf tournament.”

Reed is winless in the last 16 months dating to the Masters.

Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth, playing in the final group, lost ground on a blustery day at Liberty National.

Johnson, twice a winner of this FedEx Cup playoffs opener, didn’t make a birdie until the 10th hole. He had four bogeys over the last six holes for a 74 that dropped him five shots behind.

Spieth began the round by hitting his tee shot into the water, lost ground and momentum with a double bogey from the fairway on No. 7, and had only two birdies for a 74.

It was his second consecutiv­e Saturday swoon and this one could be costly. He is No. 69 in the FedEx Cup and the top 70 advance to the BMW Championsh­ip starting Thursday at Medinah, Ill.

Reed is at 14-under 199 and will be paired in the final group with Ancer, who had a 68. He is No. 67 in the FedEx Cup. Moriya Jutanugarn shot a fourunder 67 to take a one-stroke lead after the third round of the Ladies Scottish Open at North Berwick. Second-round leader Mi Jung Hur shot a 70 to share second place at 15-under with Jeongeun Lee, who shot a 66.

TENNIS Williams reaches final of women’s Rogers Cup

Eighth-seeded Serena Williams, 37, will play Bianca Andreescu, 19, on Sunday for the Rogers Cup women’s title at Toronto.

Williams defeated qualifier Marie Bouzkova 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 in a semifinal match and Andreescu got past Sofia Kenin 6-4, 7-6 (5) to become the first Canadian in 50 years to reach the final.

Defending champion Rafael Nadal advanced to the Rogers Cup men’s final when 16th-seeded Gael Monfils withdrew before their semifinal match in Montreal because of a sore ankle.

The top-seeded Nadal will face eighth-seeded Daniil Medvedev, a 6-1, 7-6 (6) winner over sixth-seeded Karen Khachanov.

Florida sophomore defensive back John Huggins has been dismissed from the program and a team spokesman declined to say what prompted the action.

According to a police report released last week, a 19-year-old student at the university accused Huggins of choking her during a tutoring session in October.

Huggins was upset because the tutor took his phone in hopes of ensuring he would stay for the entire session, the report said.

Austin Hill won his second race of the year in the NASCAR Truck Series, beating out Sheldon Creed to win at Michigan Internatio­nal Speedway in Brooklyn.

Flavien Prat rode five winning horses at Del Mar, accomplish­ing the feat in a flurry with victories on each of his first five mounts over the opening six races.

The victories extended Prat’s lead in the jockey standings to 25-17 over Drayden Van Dyke.
