Eli Manning’s long and distinguished reign as the New York Giants’ starting quarterback is seemingly over. Let the Daniel Jones era begin.
Coach Pat Shurmur announced Tuesday that Jones, a Duke product who was the No. 6 overall pick in the NFL draft, is replacing the two-time Super Bowl MVP as the 0-2 Giants’ quarterback, beginning Sunday at Tampa Bay.
Manning, 38, has been the Giants’ starter since his rookie season in 2004. He is in the final year of a fouryear, $84-million contract that has a no-trade clause. In two games, he has thrown for 556 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions for a rating of 78.7.
Jets quarterback Trevor Siemian will be sidelined for the rest of the season because of ankle ligament damage, and third-stringer Luke Falk will start for New York at New England on Sunday — and beyond until ex-USC star Sam Darnold returns from mononucleosis. Darnold said he’s feeling better and hopes to return in Week 5 against Philadelphia after a bye next week . ... Carolina quarterback Cam Newton’s status for Sunday’s game at Arizona is uncertain after he aggravated a foot sprain . ... New England put left tackle Isaiah Wynn (foot) on injured reserve. Center, the Kings lost 5-0. The Kings also announced they agreed to terms with defenseman Ben Hutton, who played with Vancouver last season. Hutton, 26, will join the Kings on a one-year, $1.5-million contract.

Erling Braut Haaland ,a 19-year-old Norwegian, had a hat trick in his Champions League debut as host Salzburg beat Genk 6-2 . ... Hall of Fame manager Whitey Herzog is recovering from a minor stroke. Herzog, 87, managed 18 years with the St. Louis Cardinals, Kansas City Royals, Texas Rangers and Angels.
