Browns release Whitehead after social media rant

- Associated press

Jermaine Whitehead’s rant cost him his job.

The Cleveland Browns cut the safety Monday, hours after the team reprimanded him for “totally unacceptable and highly inappropriate” posts after the team’s 24-19 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday.

Whitehead made several threatening and expletiveladen posts on Twitter while still in uniform after Cleveland’s fourth consecutive defeat. One of the tweets was directed at Dustin Fox, a former NFL player who works for the team’s radio network. Fox had sent a tweet criticizing Whitehead’s tackling.

Whitehead was in his second season with the Browns, who signed him last year after he was waived by Green Bay two days after being ejected for throwing a punch against New England.

Walton suspended

Miami Dolphins running back Mark Walton was suspended without pay for the next four games for violating NFL conduct and substance-abuse policies.

The suspension stems from Walton being arrested three times in Miami during the offseason. He was sentenced in August to six months’ probation after pleading no contest to a misdemeanor weapons charge.

Walton became a starter in Week 5 and leads the Dolphins with 201 yards rushing.

Dolphins lose Williams for season

Receiver Preston Williams will sit out the rest of the season because of a knee injury suffered in the Dolphins’ 26-18 victory over the New York Jets.

Williams has 32 receptions, which lead the Dolphins and are tied for the most among rookie receivers in the NFL. He leads Miami with 428 yards receiving and had two touchdown catches Sunday.

Indianapolis quarterback Jacoby Brissett has a sprained knee ligament and is unsure for Sunday against Miami . ... Philadelphia receiver DeSean Jackson, who returned Sunday after missing six games, is expected to miss at least six more weeks after he tore an abdominal muscle on his first series.
