Kansas works overtime to win Maui Invitation­al

Devon Dotson scored 31 points, Udoka Azubuike had seven of his 29 in overtime, and No. 4 Kansas beat Dayton 90-84 for its third Maui Invitation­al title on Wednesday.

Kansas (6-1) used a late 11-0 run to go up by three, but Dayton’s Jalen Crutcher hit a three-point shot from five feet behind the arc with 2.1 seconds left in regulation to tie the score.

The Jayhawks went to Azubuike early in overtime and the 7-footer delivered, scoring three baskets at the rim. A 32% free-throw shooter before the game, he hit three from the line in overtime.

Ryan Mikesell led the Flyers (5-1) with 19 points but missed two free throws down by five with 11.5 seconds left. Obi Toppin scored 18.

No. 6 North Carolina 76, Alabama 67: Freshman Armando Bacot had 12 points and a season-high 15 rebounds to help the Tar Heels (5-0) overwhelm the Crimson Tide in the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas. The Tar Heels entered as the nation’s No. 1 team in rebounding margin and finished with a 60-31 edge, their total setting an Atlantis tournament record.

The 6-foot-10 Bacot posted a third straight double-double, joining Mike O’Koren (1976-77) and Antawn Jamison (1995-96) as the only Tar Heels freshmen to do so.

Roy Williams earned his 876th win, moving him into a tie for fifth with late Kentucky coach Adolph Rupp. Next up: Dean Smith, who won 879 games with the Tar Heels.

at No. 7 Virginia 46, Maine 26: Starting guard Braxton Key watched with a sling on his surgically repaired wrist as the Cavaliers (7-0) put on a record-tying performanc­e. The Black Bears tied the fewest points scored by a Virginia opponent under coach Tony Bennett, and the fewest in the shot-clock era.

No. 8 Gonzaga 94, Southern Mississipp­i 69: Corey Kispert tied his career high with 28 points for the Bulldogs (7-0) in the Battle 4 Atlantis.

No. 11 Oregon 81, No. 13 Seton Hall 79: Shakur Juiston hit a tiebreakin­g putback with 14.4 seconds left as the Ducks (6-0) rallied from 19 down in the Battle 4 Atlantis. Myles Powell had 32 points for the Pirates (4-2).
