Walker to enter Hall as a Rockie

-

Larry Walker’s Hall of Fame plaque in Cooperstown, N.Y., will have a Colorado Rockies cap, not a Montreal Expos hat.

Walker spoke with Hall officials after he was elected Tuesday in his 10th and final appearance on the Baseball Writers’ Assn. of America ballot.

Born in Maple Ridge, Canada, Walker made his big league debut with the Expos in August 1989 and signed with the Rockies ahead of the 1995 season. He was traded to St. Louis in August 2004 and retired after the 2005 season.

“It’s a hard decision, being a Canadian,” Walker said.

He added the key to picking the Rockies is that Colorado was “where the majority of my damage was done.”

Walker batted .381 with an 1.172 on-base-plus-slugging percentage and 154 home runs in 597 games at Coors and .282 with 229 homers and an .873 OPS in 1,391 games elsewhere, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

The New York Mets were finalizing a multiyear agreement with quality control coach Luis Rojas to make him the team’s new manager, general manager Brodie Van Wagenen said.

Rojas would replace Carlos Beltran, who left the team last week before managing a single game as part of the fallout from the Houston Astros’ sign-stealing scandal.

The Kansas City Royals signed outfielder Alex Gordon to a $4-million contract for next season, giving the rebuilding club a veteran presence in what is expected to be a young lineup under new manager Mike Matheny. The Royals designated righthander Heath Fillmyer for assignment . ... The Philadelphia Phillies signed lefthander Francisco Liriano, right-handers Bud Norris and Drew Storen and infielder Neil Walker to minor league contracts with invitations to attend major league spring training . ... The St. Louis Cardinals signed catcher Matt Wieters to a contract for the 2020 season, bringing back the 33-year-old veteran to fill the same role behind Yadier Molina as last season.
