Bouwmeester has surgery to add defibrillator
Jay Bouwmeester had surgery Friday to insert an implantable cardioverter defibrillator to restore his heart’s normal rhythm after the St. Louis Blues defenseman collapsed on the bench during a game in Anaheim.
Bouwmeester, 36, will remain at UC Irvine Medical Center until he is cleared to return to St. Louis. There is no timetable for his return.
Bouwmeester had just completed a shift against the Ducks on Tuesday night when he collapsed. The veteran defenseman was unresponsive and doctors used a defibrillator to restore his heartbeat. He regained consciousness before he went to the hospital. The game was postponed indefinitely.
