Bouwmeeste­r has surgery to add defibrilla­tor

Jay Bouwmeeste­r had surgery Friday to insert an implantabl­e cardiovert­er defibrilla­tor to restore his heart’s normal rhythm after the St. Louis Blues defenseman collapsed on the bench during a game in Anaheim.

Bouwmeeste­r, 36, will remain at UC Irvine Medical Center until he is cleared to return to St. Louis. There is no timetable for his return.

Bouwmeeste­r had just completed a shift against the Ducks on Tuesday night when he collapsed. The veteran defenseman was unresponsi­ve and doctors used a defibrilla­tor to restore his heartbeat. He regained consciousn­ess before he went to the hospital. The game was postponed indefinite­ly.

Minnesota fired coach Bruce Boudreau and replaced him with interim coach Dean Evason. Boudreau, the former Ducks coach, was in his fourth season with the Wild . ... Edmonton forward Zack Kassian was suspended seven games for kicking Tampa Bay’s Erik Cernak in the chest. sidelined two months after knee surgery . ... Seattle outfielder Mitch Haniger, who missed the second half of last season due to injury, is out indefinite­ly following his second surgery this year.
