Patriots release Gostkowski

The New England Patriots said goodbye to another longtime staple of their twodecade run of championsh­ips, releasing kicker and franchise leading scorer Stephen Gostkowski. The three-time Super Bowl champion spent his entire 14-year career in New England. Drafted in 2006, Gostkowski passed Adam Vinatieri as the Patriots’ leading scorer with 1,775 points in 2014 . ... Brian Hoyer is returning to the Patriots for a third time. The veteran quarterbac­k agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.05 million. Hoyer was released by Indianapol­is on Saturday. The 34-year-old began his career as Tom Brady’s backup in New England in 2009 and has spent time with seven NFL teams during his 11-year career.

The Washington Redskins acquired quarterbac­k Kyle Allen from the Carolina Panthers, according to a person with knowledge of the move. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been announced. Ron Rivera coached Allen in Carolina . ... The New York Jets and linebacker James Burgess agreed to terms on a one-year deal, agent Drew Rosenhaus told the AP. Burgess started the final 10 games of last season at inside linebacker for the Jets after injuries decimated the position . ... A person familiar with the deals said the Atlanta Falcons reached agreements with wide receiver Laquon Treadwell ,a former first-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings, and guard Justin McCray . ... Dallas Cowboys Pro Bowl center Travis Frederick, 29, announced his retirement via Twitter.

U.S. Soccer named sports agent and former MLS executive William Wilson as the federation’s chief executive and secretary general Monday, filling a position that was vacant since Dan Flynn’s retirement in September.

Wilson 52, has spent the last eight years with the powerhouse Wasserman sports agency, where he was executive vice president and co-head of the football division, which represente­d more than 100 NFL players.

Before that, Wilson was executive vice president for internatio­nal business and special events for MLS and its marketing arm, Soccer United Marketing.
