Little League cancels Series
This year’s Little League World Series and the championship tournaments in six other Little League divisions were canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Little League President Stephen Keener announced the cancellations in a Facebook Live broadcast from Williamsport, Pa., saying it would be “impossible” to hold the events amid ongoing restrictions on large gatherings and travel.
The Little League World Series has been held every August since 1947 and had never been canceled.
A former U.S. Olympic gymnastics coach was suspended for eight years for verbally and emotionally abusing athletes.
Maggie Haney, who works at a club in New Jersey, was penalized Wednesday by an independent hearing panel formed by USA Gymnastics. The 42-yearold coach was credited with guiding Laurie Hernandez to team and individual medals at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. — David Wharton
The NCAA faces a federal lawsuit accusing the organization of failing to address gender-based violence by male athletes against female students at colleges and universities. Plaintiffs in the suit, filed this week in U.S. District Court in Michigan, include women who have been athletes at Michigan State and Nebraska.
The NHL remains intent on completing this season when health experts deem it safe to resume play and the league is willing to delay the start of next season by two months or more to accomplish that, Commissioner Gary Bettman said during an interview with NHL Network.
However, he again said no decisions have been made on a timetable or format and that the league and the NHL Players’ Assn. will continue to consider many options for returning. — Helene Elliott
