Rams to host first SoFi event

Rams owner Stan Kroenke is paying for constructi­on of SoFi Stadium and, after a string of concert postponeme­nts and cancellati­ons caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, his team is now scheduled to host the first event at the $5-billion venue.

The Rams announced that their preseason opener against the New Orleans Saints is scheduled to be played Aug. 14 at 7 p.m. The Chargers, who share the stadium with the Rams, previously had announced their preseason opener against the Dallas Cowboys would be at home on Aug. 16. — Gary Klein

Johnny Juzang won’t have to wait long for his homecoming. The Southern California native will be able to play for UCLA next season after the NCAA approved his waiver for immediate eligibilit­y, clearing the Kentucky transfer to join the Bruins’ backcourt.

The addition of the 6foot-6 guard known for his shooting will help offset the loss of highly touted point guard Daishen Nix, who opted for the new lucrative G League academy over a year or two at UCLA. — Ben Bolch

Rain washed out the Cup Series race Wednesday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

The race was reschedule­d for Thursday at 4 p.m. PDT, which in turn forced NASCAR to move the Xfinity Series race scheduled for Saturday at Bristol Motor Speedway. The Xfinity Series race will instead be run Monday night, a day after the Cup Series.

Soccer could be the first U.S. profession­al team sport to return from the COVID-19 break with the NWSL announcing plans for a 25game tournament to be played behind closed doors in Utah beginning June 27.

Games, which will be broadcast and streamed by CBS, will be played without fans at Zions Bank and Rio Tinto stadiums. — Kevin Baxter

The Nevada Athletic Commission unanimousl­y agreed to allow two UFC events and two Top Rank boxing shows in Las Vegas over the next two weeks.

The UFC confirmed its plans to stage a show without fans in attendance Saturday night at the UFC Apex arena on its expansive corporate complex in Las Vegas, followed by the UFC 250 pay-per-view show at the same place June 6.

Top Rank is expected to hold fan-free boxing shows at the MGM Grand on June 9 and June 11.

Australian Open champions Victoria Azarenka and Sofia Kenin and U.S. Open winners Sloane Stephens and Bianca Andreescu will take part in the Credit One Bank Invitation­al team tennis event in Charleston, S.C., June 23-28.
