Browns’ Garrett gets huge deal

- staff and wire reports

Myles Garrett’s on-field misbehavior last season damaged his public image. It didn’t change how the Cleveland Browns feel about him.

The team signed Garrett to a five-year, $125-million contract extension Wednesday, making the talented edge rusher the NFL’s highest-paid defensive player.

Last season Garrett ripped off Pittsburgh quarterback Mason Rudolph’s helmet and struck him in the head with it, leading to a sixgame suspension.

The Tennessee Titans announced they agreed on a “multiyear extension” with NFL rushing leader Derrick Henry, reportedly a fouryear, $50-million deal . ... Dak Prescott will play whatever becomes of the 2020 season under the one-year franchise tag after the Dallas Cowboys and their star quarterback couldn’t agree on a long-term contract.

The deadline passed Wednesday and the Chargers and Hunter Henry ,as expected, did not agree on a long-term deal. The tight end will instead play on the $10.6-million franchise tag in 2020. The sides now cannot negotiate until after the season. Henry, who is entering his fifth year in the NFL, is the league’s highest-paid tight end based on annual average salary. — Jeff Miller

City of Philadelphia officials clarified their ban on public events, opening up the possibility the Eagles would be allowed to have fans in the stadium if the city changes its rules before or during the season, assuming the NFL plays games this season.

David Lewis, a key member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ 1979 team that reached the NFC title game and a USC product, has died. He was 65. In the Trojans’ 1974 comeback victory over Notre Dame, Lewis’ hit on a kickoff return helped turn the game around.
