Sarkisian salary rises with Tide

Alabama offensive coordinato­r Steve Sarkisian will make $2.5 million a year under a new three-year deal reached after his flirtation with the Colorado head coaching job.

University trustees approved Sarkisian’s new deal and others for assistant coaches and support staffers on Wednesday. It includes a raise of more than $800,000.

Sarkisian, the former USC and Washington head coach, signed a three-year deal worth $1.6 million annually in March 2019, returning to Alabama after two seasons running the Atlanta Falcons’ offense.

In July, Sarkisian underwent a procedure to correct a congenital cardiovasc­ular anomaly, but the university said he is expected to make a full recovery.

Jeremy Obobisse and Sebastian Blanco scored for Portland and the Timbers held off the Philadelph­ia Union 2-1 in the semifinals of the MLS Is Back tournament in Orlando, Fla. The Timbers will face the Orlando-Minnesota winner.

The U.S. Tennis Assn. announced that its compensati­on to players at this year’s U.S. Open will be $53.4 million — which is 93.3% of the roughly $57.2 million awarded in 2019. Women’s and men’s singles champions will each earn $3 million, down $850,000 — or 22% — from the top prizes at the Grand Slam tournament last year, part of a decrease of nearly $4 million in compensati­on in 2020.

Former French Open finalist Sara Errani showed signs of reviving her claycourt prowess by rallying past Kristyna Pliskova 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to reach the Palermo Ladies Open quarterfin­als. Errani will face rising French player Fiona Ferro, who beat eighth-seeded Ekaterina Alexandrov­a 7-5, 6-2.

Notre Dame transfer Phil Jurkovec will be able to play quarterbac­k at Boston College this season, if there is one, after receiving an immediate eligibilit­y waiver from the NCAA . ... Alabama guard John Petty Jr. is staying in school instead of remaining eligible for the NBA draft. Petty, the Tide’s top three-point shooter at 44% last season, averaged 14.5 points and a team-high 6.6 rebounds.

Toronto’s Jake Muzzin was discharged from a hospital overnight but will not play for the Maple Leafs for the remainder of their Stanley Cup qualifier series against the Columbus Blue Jackets because of an injury he sustained in Game 2.
