Charlotte calls off game after outbreak

Saturday’s game between No. 12 North Carolina and Charlotte was canceled after the 49ers announced contact tracing had depleted the offensive line.

Charlotte announced the decision Thursday, two days before the Conference USA program was to visit Chapel Hill for the first meeting between the schools.

The school said in a statement there had been three positive coronavirus cases among football players discovered through regular testing during the past two weeks.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s office said her requirement that athletes wear masks applies to Big Ten football in Michigan, but a face shield will suffice for players, and the administration is open to potentially changing the order.

Washington defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike said that he is opting out of the upcoming season and declaring for the 2021 NFL draft.

Brown University and attorneys for student-athletes who challenged the Ivy League school’s decision to reduce several women’s varsity sports teams to club status announced a proposed settlement.

In addition to restoring the women’s equestrian and women’s fencing teams to varsity status, the sides also said that a 1998 legal agreement ensuring gender equity in varsity sports at Brown would end on Aug. 31, 2024.

Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp said graduate transfer Collin Hill will start at quarterback for South Carolina when it opens against No. 15 Tennessee on Sept. 26. Hill beat out last year’s freshman starter, Ryan Hilinski, the former Orange Lutheran High standout.
