Barkley, Bosa among stars who may be done for year

- Associated press

A star-studded cast of NFL players departed their games with injuries Sunday and some could miss the rest of the season.

New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley is believed to have torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and receiver Sterling Shepard sustained a toe injury in their loss at Chicago. Two other running backs went down: All-Pro Christian McCaffery departed Carolina’s loss to Tampa Bay with a right ankle injury, and San Francisco’s Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman both left with knee injuries. Mostert will be reexamined Monday for what is thought to be a mild ligament sprain.

The news for the 49ers was more dire on defense. Nick Bosa, the reigning defensive rookie of the year, and fellow lineman Solomon Thomas, the third pick in the 2017 draft, both were carted off the field with what the 49ers feared could be torn knee ligaments. Bosa and Solomon will be examined again.

That wasn’t all: Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo sat out the second half of a 31-13 rout of the New York Jets with a right ankle injury that could sideline him next week too.

“You have a little mixed emotions when you lose some guys like that,” coach Kyle Shanahan said. “When you do lose some good guys like we did, that’ll probably be for a while, we need guys to get better.”

Denver lost quarterback Drew Lock toa shoulder injury and receiver Courtland Sutton to a knee injury against Tennessee. Indianapolis might have lost two starters for the season against Minnesota. Receiver Paris Campbell was carted off after a blow to his left knee while safety Malik Hooker left in the second half with an Achilles injury.

Minnesota lost running back Mike Boone (concussion) and linebacker Anthony Barr (shoulder). Jets receivers Breshad Perriman (ankle) and Chris Hogan (ribs) departed early, as did cornerbacks Quincy Wilson (concussion) and Arthur Maulet (groin) and center Connor McGovern (hamstring).

Atlanta hopes offensive tackle Kaleb McGary merely sustained a sprained knee ligament against Dallas and also lost defensive end Takk McKinley (groin), linebacker Foye Oluokun (hamstring) and safety Ricardo Allen (elbow).
