Stanford’s VanDerveer gets record 1,099th win

Tara VanDerveer became the winningest women’s college basketball coach Tuesday night, passing the late Pat Summitt with her 1,099th victory as No. 1 Stanford romped to a 104- 61 victory over host Pacific.

Dressed casually in all black, VanDerveer received the game ball after the f inal buzzer. Her dancing players chanted “Tara! Tara!” and gave her a new pullover reading “T- DAWG” to celebrate the latest milestone for the Hall of Fame coach in her 35th season with Stanford and 42nd overall as a college head coach.

“It’s really sweet,” said VanDerveer, whose Cardinal improved to 5- 0. The Tigers were playing their season opener.

VanDerveer, 67, improved her career record to 1,099253. The road to this historic night began with her f irst head coaching job at Idaho from 1978 to 1980. She then moved to Ohio State ( 1980 to 1985) and Stanford, where she is 947- 202. Connecticu­t coach Geno Auriemma is right behind at 1,093 wins.

Men’s top 25

at No. 10 Tennessee 79, Appalachia­n State 38: Victor Bailey had 13 points, and the Volunteers ( 3- 0) put their stif ling defense on full display. Tennessee held the Mountainee­rs ( 4- 2) scoreless for the f irst 6: 22 while jumping out to a 13- 0 lead.

at No. 12 Wisconsin 77, Loyola Chicago 63: Brad Davison and D’Mitrik Trice each scored 17 points, and the Badgers ( 5- 1) capitalize­d on their sizzling three- point shooting to beat the Ramblers ( 3- 1). Wisconsin f inished 10 for 18 from beyond the arc.

at No. 13 Illinois 92, Minnesota 65: Kofi Cockburn scored a career- high 33 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in only 25 minutes to lead the Illini ( 5- 2) over the Gophers ( 6- 1) in the Big Ten opener for both teams.

at No. 15 Florida State 74, Georgia Tech 61: Freshman guard Scottie Barnes had 16 points and six rebounds, and the Seminoles ( 4- 0) pulled away midway through the second half to beat the Yellow Jackets ( 2- 3) in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both teams.

at Virginia Tech 66, No. 24 Clemson 60: Tyrece Radford scored 15 points to lead the Hokies ( 5- 1) to an upset of the Tigers ( 5- 1) in both teams’ ACC opener. Virginia Tech was 25 for 31 on free throws, including four for four in the final seconds.
