City football begins April 9

The Los Angeles City Section announced that the high school football season for Los Angeles Unified School District teams will begin with games April 9, followed by games April 16, 23 and 30.

The City Section crosscount­ry and water polo seasons have been extended to April 3. The cross-country championsh­ips have been canceled because of L.A. County public health rules that don’t allow more than two teams in a single competitio­n.

Girls’ volleyball has been moved to the spring sports calendar.

Schools will be offering boys’ and girls’ volleyball outdoors.

After more than a year out, Roger Federer started his 24th season on tour with a win. It was far from easy for the former No. 1, though, as he was pushed hard by England’s Dan Evans at the Qatar Open before winning the second-round match 7-6 (8), 3-6, 7-5.

LAFC will open the 2021 MLS season at home, playing host to Austin FC on April 17. The Galaxy will start their season on the road the next day against David Beckham’s Inter Miami.

The women’s college basketball team at William Peace in North Carolina forfeited a chance at its conference championsh­ip to stand in solidarity with a teammate who was discipline­d for her part in an incident during which she said she was the target of racial slurs.
