Outbreak fear ends tournament
The remainder of the world junior hockey championship in Canada was canceled over fears of a coronavirus outbreak.
The International Ice Hockey Federation made the announcement Wednesday on the recommendation of the organization’s medical officials.
Two games had already been forfeited because of positive coronavirus test results among U.S. and Czech players.
“We owed it to the participating teams to do our best to create the conditions necessary for this event to work,” IIHF President Luc Tardif said.
The NHL is following other leagues and U.S. government guidance by cutting COVID-19 isolation times for players and personnel to five days under certain conditions where allowed by local laws.
The NBA postponed Wednesday’s game involving Miami and San Antonio after a combination of injuries and positive coronavirus tests left the Heat unable to meet the requirement of eight available players.
The NCAA men’s and women’s basketball tournaments are scheduled to go on as planned amid a rise in postponements and cancellations, NCAA senior vice president of basketball Dan Gavitt told NCAA.com.
New York Jets coach Robert Saleh cleared COVID-19 protocols and returned to the facility to run practice for the first time since testing positive for the coronavirus last week.
Among the players the Chargers activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list included edge rusher Joey Bosa and center Corey Linsley, both Pro Bowl picks. Also activated were receiver Jalen Guyton and defensive backs Trey Marshall and Kemon Hall. The team added starting right tackle Storm Norton and edge rusher/linebacker Kenneth Murray Jr. to the list. — Jeff Miller
