Canada gymnast alleges abuse

A former member of the Canadian national gymnastics team wrote a public letter accusing the country’s 2016 Olympic coach of inappropri­ate and unwanted touching.

The letter by Abby Pearson Spadafora, 38, revealed the latest in a long series of allegation­s of sexual, emotional and physical abuse by coaches Dave and Elizabeth Brubaker, who have been banned by Gymnastics Canada.

The U.S. Justice Department said it will not pursue criminal charges against former FBI agents who failed to quickly open an investigat­ion of sports doctor Larry Nassar despite learning in 2015 that he was accused of sexually assaulting female gymnasts.

The Office of Inspector General found that two former agents likely provided “inaccurate or incomplete informatio­n” when investigat­ors subsequent­ly tried to understand what happened, but more would be needed to file charges, the department said.

New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas was at the team’s facility for voluntary offseason practices but didn’t participat­e, and first-year head coach Dennis Allen expects Thomas to be ready for the start of training camp at the end of July. Thomas missed last season because of a second ankle procedure.

Kings defenseman Sean Durzi underwent shoulder surgery and is expected to be recovered for next season . ... Drake Batherson scored on a power play 43 seconds into overtime to give Canada a 4-3 comeback win over Sweden in the world hockey championsh­ip play. Canada will face the Czech Republic in the semifinals; the U.S. will play host Finland after the Americans beat Switzerlan­d 3-0 behind Jeremy Swayman’s 33 saves.

The Sugar Bowl has been moved off its usual primetime spot to 9 a.m. PDT on Dec. 31 to avoid a conflict with a Monday night NFL game. The bowl schedule announced for the upcoming season begins Dec. 16 and ends with the College Football Playoff championsh­ip on Jan. 9 at SoFi Stadium.

Cal State Dominguez Hills opened the NCAA Division II softball championsh­ip with a 5-1 win over top-seeded Texas-Tyler in Denver . ... The ClaremontM­udd-Scripps women’s tennis team upset No. 1 Chicago 5-1 to win the NCAA Division III national championsh­ip in Orlando, Fla.

Reggie Warford, who was Kentucky’s second Black men’s basketball player and first Black basketball player to graduate, has died. He was 67.
