World No. 1 Jin Young Ko played the final five holes in three under to pull within three shots of second-round leaders Minjee Lee and Mina Harigae at the U.S. Women’s Open at Southern Pines, N.C.
Harigae and Lee were at nine-under 133 after 36 holes. Lee shot a five-under 66, and Harigae had a 69. Hye-Jin Choi shot a 64 to come within a shot of matching the lowest round in the event’s 77-year history.
Southland native Danielle Kang, the No. 12 player in the world, barely made the cut after revealing she has a tumor on her spine. Among those who didn’t make the cut were defending champion Yuka Saso, 10-time major winner Annika Sorenstam and 2015 champion Michelle Wie West in her penultimate tournament.
