China launches pilot program to open more urban green parks

-

China is set to carry out a pilot project to open more parks to the public in urban areas so that more citizens can access green spaces and soak in the beauty of nature, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development announced on Monday.

Relevant authorities across the country were encouraged to define open and shared areas and improve supporting service facilities in parks, lawns and other green lands. This will help meet the needs of citizens’ outdoor activities such as camping, exercise, fitness, leisure and recreation.

Before early March this year, pilot cities are required to conduct research and mapping of green areas. The open and shared green space should be located in an area with relatively smooth terrain with complete and convenient service facilities and emergency support.

Areas with natural disaster risks and ecological fragility should be excluded, as well as places easily interfering with breeding and activities of wild animals, said the ministry.

Following the research, cities should then determine the ideal areas, opening hours, types of activities and the capacity of tourists according to the actual situation, together with measures of improving facilities, services and plant protection.

The lawn areas opened for recreational activities should be based on the growth cycle and characteristics of plants, and systems such as land rotation and protection can be promoted to avoid excessive vegetation being trampled and affecting normal growth.

The pilot program will last one year.
